Mark Wiens was astonished by the massive 'Dino' meatballs in Surabaya, which featured a kilogram of pounded beef paste attached to a giant rib bone handle. He particularly enjoyed the rich, oily beef broth and the surprise of finding tender braised meat hidden inside the giant meatball. His experience was completed by trying the local style of seasoning the soup with sweet soy sauce and tomato sauce.
