What the creator captured
Davud Akhundzada visited the Aral Sea to raise awareness about what he describes as the world's biggest man-made disaster caused by Soviet-era cotton irrigation. He was deeply moved by the sight of abandoned fishing ships sitting in the sand where a flourishing port once existed. To honor the local culture, he wore a traditional black hat, which is the namesake of the Karakalpak people.
